D&B Viability Rating

The D&B Viability Rating is a multi-dimensional rating that delivers a highly insightful and reliable assessment of a company’s future viability. The predictive components predict the likelihood that a company will go out of business, become inactive, or file for bankruptcy over the next 12 months. The descriptive components provide an indication of the amount of predictive data available to make a reliable risk assessment, as well as insight into the age, type and size of business.

Requirements & Options

When requesting this D&B Direct product, a valid D-U-N-S Number for a company, a country code of "US" and the appropriate product code will be required. If this information is not available, refer to obtaining a company D-U-N-S Number for assistance. A trade up option exists to request data for the headquarters when the requested organization is a branch.

NOTE: The product code for D&B Viability Rating is VIAB_RAT. This product may be included in the Monitoring process.

The preceding list is not presented in the order, nor manner, in which the information is packaged and delivered via the D&B Direct API.

While data for a particular company may not contain values for all of the business elements, there may be items that are considered by D&B to be essential to yield the maximum benefit of a data layer. If any of these essential elements do not contain a value for a particular company, an error code will be returned, and your organization will not incur a usage credit for the request.

The Product Availability Lookup feature may be utilized to determine if this D&B Direct product is available for a given D-U-N-S Number.

The availability of certain scores delivered by this product may be limited due to a lack of sufficient company or industry specific data to perform the calculations.

The Viability Score is a high-level risk indicator that assesses the probability that a company will no longer be in business within the next 12 months, compared to all US businesses within the D&B database.

The Viability score is based on available financial data, trade payments, firmographics and other business activity. The ranking ranges from 1 to 9 where 9 reflects the highest probability of becoming no longer viable and 1 reflects the lowest probability.

The Portfolio Comparison is a more detailed risk indicator that assesses the viability of a company, compared to similar businesses within the same model segment. Each company will be placed in 1 of the 4 model segments which are determined by the amount and type of data available: Available Financial Data, Established Trade Payments, Limited Trade Payments or Firmographics and Business Activity.

The Portfolio Comparison ranking ranges from 1 to 9 where 9 reflects the highest probability of becoming no longer viable and 1 reflects the lowest probability.

The Data Depth Indicator presents the level of data available for a company. Data depth assists in the assessment of whether a company will no longer be viable and includes financial attributes, commercial trading activity and firmographics.

The level of data is represented by a letter on a scale of A – G where A reflects the greatest level of the greatest level of predictive data to make a highly reliable assessment of company viability, and G reflects a minimal level of data which can be considered descriptive. The more comprehensive the data, the more precise the overall D&B Viability Rating becomes.

If a company has been placed in the Special Category, a letter ranging from H – M will be assigned to identify the specific reason.

Ranking Special Category Description
H Out of Business - Business is either Bankrupt (chapter 7) or an officer or owner of the business confirmed they no longer operate and are out of business.
I Unable to Confirm Designation - D&B is unable to confirm active operations at a specific location due to the business showing limited to no business activity and multiple signs of inactivity (e.g. disconnected phone, vacant address, no longer in a telephone directory etc.)
J Bankruptcy - Business has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the plan of reorganization is not yet confirmed.
K High Risk (Severe Risk) - Business displays characteristics of misrepresentation.
L Self Reported Duns Support Record - Business' request for a DUNs number requires an investigation or confirmation of information from D&B.
M Business Deterioration (Severe Risk) - Business displays characteristics of financials distress, including signs of current or imminent business failure or operating difficulty.

This product is only available for organizations domiciled in the United States. If the trade up option was selected, and the headquarters is domiciled in another country, an error may be returned depending on the scope of the particular database being accessed by the product request.

Access to this information is provided on a metered basis; and will require data layer entitlement prior to use in the production environment. A built-in feature exists to prevent duplicate billing when multiple requests with the same D-U-N-S Number and product code are submitted on the same calendar day (which is based on Eastern Standard Time [GMT-5]).

An option exists to retain the results from all successful requests for this product in a Product Request Archive, which may be retrieved without incurring additional usage charges.
